Chatzilla Tutorial
Chatzilla (CZ) is an IRC client that is an extention of the FireFox browser. So, if you don't have Firefox installed, you need to do that before going any farther.
Why use ChatZilla?
It's free. It's still evolving. You can style the presentation with CSS. If
you don't use FireFox, you can launch it stand-alone from a short cut. (If you're
not using FireFox, you better be using Opera... both are much better than Internet
Exploder.... errr, Explorer)
While in FireFox, install the extention and then restart FireFox.
In FireFox, click on Tools / ChatZilla

The first thing you want to do is set your nickname. In the input area, type:
/nick yournickname
All commands in IRC begin with a slash. You will see your nick
change in the bottom left. On dynamix.com you cannot pick someone's nick if
it is registered. You will get a message saying you need to change your nick
in 1 minute if you do choose a registerd nickname. (later you will register
your own)
Next, get on a server. In the input area, type this: /server irc.dynamix.com
this is the server our community uses for IRC. There are hundreds more IRC servers
out there.
Join channels. Go to the input area and paste in this line if you want all
the beml5 teams:
/join va,osis,rd,nxa,alpinestarz,resurrection,vf,mig
If you just want to join va's channel put in: /join va
Right click on the channel tabs and click "open this channel at startup" on all the channels.
Passworded channels: If you have a passworded channel you need to add the password in the auto-connect preference. In Preferences /Global Settings / Startup tab / Auto-connect URLs, edit the channel and add ?key=password, such as: irc://irc.dynamix.com/antics?key=password
Registering
To register, make a new channel for privacy. Type /join abc456x
or something odd that won't be a real channel name. Make sure you're using the
nick you want to register. (To change it type /nick yourNickName
) In this channel type:
/ns register myPassword myEmail
You will be sent an email which you need to respond to quickly. (ie. don't wait
an hour.)
The email will ask you to put in an access code. It will give you the line to
cut and paste into any dynamix channel to complete the registration process.
Identification
Now that you're registered with irc.dynamix.com. You have to identify yourself
using the password you registered with. (We can automate this step in CZ).
type: /ns identify myPassword
Don't screw this up or your password will be broadcast to the channel you're
on. Make sure the slash is the FIRST character in the input area.
Preferences
Click on ChatZilla / Preferences; click on global settings, then the lists tab. Scroll down and add some stalk words. At least add your nick to it. Click add and then add your nick in there. When someone types something that is in your stalk list on any of the channels you're browsing, you hear a beep-beep-beep and the text will be displayed in the irc.dynamix.com server tab. It is copied to that tab automatically for convenience in finding it.
Click on irc.dynamix.com on the left column, then click on the lists tab. In the auto-perform section add ns identify password as a command. This is what will identify you automatically when you join the dynamix server. DO NOT put the leading "/" in the command.
Click the ok button at the bottom and restart CZ. You should be auto-identified and join all the channels you wanted to open at startup.
Motifs
CZ's output is styled using cascading style sheets (CSS). There are site on the web which have collections of these motifs or you can make your own. Here's one site. I also have a link to my favorite basic motif, which adds a little color to the text. Drag and drop this CSS file to your chatzilla window.
Desktop Shortcut
target: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -chat
start in: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox"
There are other features to CZ which you can explore yourself. This guide is to get you started.
